Hobbies obviously exist in many forms. However, some are better than others on the go. As a portable hobby, I think photography may be one of the most versatile hobbies there is.
Photography is a great portable hobby. Most of us have at least a camera phone that comes with us everywhere. I take that to another level with dedicated cameras. However, they still come with me almost any time I do something.
Photography is such a portable hobby that it mixes with others
One of my favorite things about photography is that I can take it anywhere. I love riding dirt bikes and mountain bikes, and I often bring a camera with me on rides. I’ve got an Evoc camera bag with a water pouch and absolutely love taking this portable hobby with me during other hobbies. I can forget about it while actively doing the main hobby of the day, but it’s always there when I want to capture a moment.
As a portable hobby, it’s hard to beat photography. I’ve taken cameras on fishing trips, golf courses, mountain bike rides, and many more activities. Not only is it a great enhancement to those hobbies, but it keeps the creative juices flowing. Sometimes bringing a camera along for another hobby has helped inspire me to keep picking up my camera later. Beyond that, it’s been great just to know I have many of these moments documented.
What other portable hobby can help you appreciate your surroundings?
The image above was captured out of the back seat of my dad’s truck while stuck in construction traffic. I was getting a little restless during the long wait and realized “wait, we’re in a beautiful part of the country, and I have a camera.” What other portable hobby can help you appreciate things like that? Were it not for my camera, I would have likely squandered the opportunity to take in where we were stuck.
Since picking up photography as my portable hobby of choice, I’ve found myself more interested in my surroundings. I’m more likely to slow down on a mountain bike ride or a hike and notice everything around me. Being encouraged to stop, smell the roses, and find pretty photos has been a super nice perk to the hobby.
What’s your favorite hobby to take with you?
Obviously, I love taking my photography with me everywhere. My wife, however, prefers to bring her knitting along. There are a lot of choices out there for a portable hobby to learn. I greatly enjoy the fact that photography seamlessly integrates with so many of my other hobbies. Do you have a favorite portable hobby? If so, what is it? Do you find yourselves bringing photography along with you during other hobbies? Let me know in the comments!
